Monterey, California; What to See and Do

IMG_0943

We have been to Monterey several times over the past 20 years, it is a quiet lovely town.  You can stay at expensive hotels ($200/night) or more affordable smaller motels ($100/night).  We have stayed at the Mariposa Inn a couple of times and it is perfect for a family vacation on the thrifty side.  It is rated #10 Best Value on Trip Advisor.  They have a pool, hot tub, fireplace in every unit (which you will need, it gets chilly in the evenings), and a complimentary breakfast. It sits more inland so you will have to drive down to Cannery Row unless you are in for a long walk.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is at one end of Cannery Row and is the number one must see!  I took so many cool pictures the last time we were there.  It is the best aquarium my family has ever been to. The admission is steep at almost $50 for adults, but it is so worth it, especially if you love the ocean.  There are some hands-on exhibits where you can touch small manta rays and starfish.  This place makes everyone feel like a little kid again.  They have added a restaurant in the past few years, but I haven’t tried it.

Cannery Row is home to a lot of great restaurants.  We ate at the Fish Hopper overlooking the bay and enjoyed our lunch after the aquarium.  The view was amazing and if you are lucky you might spot a couple of otters floating in the water.  I had the Sanddabs with a light basil sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables.  My husband had the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna served with rice and Ponzu sauce.  The service was great and the atmosphere relaxed.

We stopped in one afternoon for a drink and to play pool at Blue Fin Café and Billiards on the 3rd floor of a brick building on Cannery Row not far from the aquarium.  It has 14 pool tables at $15 an hour and a giant Jenga set.  It is a good place to just chill and have a drink.  We had the sampler platter of nachos, chicken tenders, cheese sticks and potato skins and were set for the evening.

You have to drive down to the shore to explore the shelly beach and watch the sun go down.  Find a place to park along Ocean View Boulevard in front of the Point Pinos Lighthouse or Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove. It is just beautiful. You can sometimes spot small deer on the golf course. You can tour the lighthouse during the day.  It is fun to go to the top floor and look at the fantastic view of the Pacific.

Not far from the lighthouse is the Beach House Restaurant at Lovers Point, they have a sunset special that is too cheap to pass up.  They have six entrees that start at $9.90 and you can get a glass of house wine for under $4!  It starts at 4:00 and runs until 5:30 every day. The view is awesome, too, it overlooks the bay and Lovers Point Park.

The recreational walking trail is great for getting in your exercise right along the bay and ocean. This paved trail is perfect for long walks or bike rides and it is never crowded.  You can get in all of the distance you want in a beautiful place. A special trail that you won’t forget.  Keep an eye out on the water, you can usually spot otters or sea lions while walking along the trail.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is just a little over 4 miles from Monterey and is a fun little town to window shop and dine at.  The city beach park is worth checking out, it is a wide sandy beach, with driftwood washed up on the shore.  There are little orange poppies everywhere. We ate at Demetra Café, on the corner of Ocean and Lincoln.  The whole family had Greek food and it was really good.  They have a nice patio for warm sunny days.

We drove east to the Carmel Valley to visit Chateau Julien (which is now Folktale Winery and Vineyards).  The estate is just gorgeous with wonderfully landscaped grounds.  They will give you a tour of the 10,000 square foot barrel hall (that can hold up to 2000 barrels of wine) and vineyard.  It is definitely something to see. They are committed to sustainable farming practices for all their wines. The 5-acre vineyard at the winery is 100% organically farmed.  At the end of the tour, everyone gathered for a tasting out on the covered patio.  It was a beautiful day to soak up the sun and gorgeous mountain scenery.

There is so much to see and do around Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel.  It is a unique area and has such a calming effect.  There are whale watching tours, bay cruises, 17-mile drive, Pebble Beach Golf Course and the drive along Highway 1 down to Big Sur is breathtaking.  The colors of the water change at every turn.  It is gorgeous along the coast.

We have found that flying into San Jose and driving to Monterey is the easiest and cheapest way to go via Southwest Airlines.  The airport is super easy to get in and out of, and car rental is right in the terminal, you just cross the street to pick up your car.  It takes just a little over an hour and a half to drive through rolling farmland to get there, and you can stop at little farmers markets along the way.

Eating Our Way Through the Florida Keys

We stayed at the Lime Tree resort on Long Key, between Islamorada and Marathon a few years ago during the Winter.  These are my favorite restaurants from the trip.  There are excellent conch fritter carts in Key West with crispy, moist fritters with mouth-watering dipping sauces, try them out!  I highly recommend the City View bus tour of Key West and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum was interesting and educational.  Stop to visit the entertaining dolphins and informative staff at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon.  I checked to make sure all of these restaurants and attractions are still open after Hurricane Irma.

Roof Top Café

The tour bus driver said this place had the best key lime pie in Key West, so we checked it out. They have a daily special for lunch that is quite a bit of food for the price. I had the mixed greens salad with a crab/shrimp cake on top, and it was awesome! It was the best crab cake I have ever had. We each had a mimosa with fresh squeezed orange juice. My husband had the daily special which included black bean soup, Cuban panini, key lime tart and two conch fritters. He enjoyed his meal and wished the key lime tart was a more significant piece of pie!

Hungry Tarpon

This place looks like a total dive, but do not pass up the opportunity to eat here! We ate breakfast on our last day in the area and it was amazing! I wish we would have gone here every day on our trip. I had the Diego Frittata with sautéed hash browns, eggs, chorizo, red bell peppers, cheese and Ranchero salsa.  My husband had the Alligator Reef with eggs, chorizo, black beans, cilantro, tomatoes and feta cheese.  The outdoor patio is so inviting and relaxing with an awesome view of the water. You can watch people hand feeding the tarpons on the dock while the pelicans compete for a fish. Hold on to your sunglasses and cell phones, if you try this.  They have a whole collection of glasses that have been retrieved from the water!  There is a small gift shop village set up on the grounds, too. You could spend two hours here easily. Loved it!

Island Fish Company

We ate at this restaurant twice while visiting the area. Their smoked fish dip is delicious, and they serve it with crackers. The Chef Salad is awesome; it has about a cup of crab and shrimp meat in it. It is an excellent value for the size of the portions. Very laid back and relaxing atmosphere right on the water where you can watch boats coming in from fishing trips and birds just hanging out on the docks.

Sunset Grill and Raw Bar

We walked the 7-mile bridge and took the steps down to the Sunset Grill for drinks. It was happy hour (3-6), we had a couple of vodka tonics each. Technically we didn’t eat here, the bill totaled nine bucks; we couldn’t believe how cheap this place was for the location and excellent view. The bartender was quick and attentive. They have a swimming pool and movie screen. This is one giant tiki hut right on the water!

Restaurant Week Kansas City; Osteria Il Centro

We had our office Christmas party at OIC in 2016, and it was a fantastic experience.  The restaurant has such an intimate feel, almost pub-like, but upscale. It is centrally located at 51st and Main in the South Plaza.  The name means “meeting place at the center” which originated from small, local restaurants scattered throughout the Mediterranean hillsides where locals could enjoy wine and freshly made cuisine.

Make note that reservations are not accepted most of the year, the exception is New Year’s and Valentine’s Day, so arrive early.  They have a 1,100 bottle wine list, and Wine Spectator has given them the “Best of Award of Excellence.”  Their happy hour is an excellent opportunity to try out their wonderful appetizers for half price and wine by the glass for $7; it is Monday through Friday from 4 to 6.

Osteria appetizer

We had an abundance of food at our party.  We started off with wine and the appetizer platters that had bruschetta, goat cheese, hummus, pita bread, pesto, and calamari!  Hands down one of the best appetizers I have ever had.  At happy hour it is a steal for $12!

Osteria Salmon-w-martinie05301-1024x768

Everyone’s entrees looked amazing. I had fresh caught Atlantic Salmon marinated, grilled and served with cilantro beurre blanc, mashed potatoes and sautéed zucchini, peppers, and broccoli.  It was fabulous!  My husband had the lamb chops entrée which consisted of five marinated and grilled lamb chops topped with a rosemary brandy sauce, rosemary garlic mashed potatoes and the same sautéed vegetables that I had.  He said they were the best lamb chops he has ever had.

The gelato balls were ordered for dessert for everyone to share because Lord knows we didn’t have any room left for an entire dessert by ourselves.  The colossal gelato balls are raspberry gelato, coated in dark chocolate and covered with a fresh raspberry sauce.  Heaven!  Plan to take your time at dinner; it is a slow paced atmosphere for you to linger and enjoy.  The staff is amazing and attentive. Chef Jaime Salgado’s creations are out of this world!  It has been voted most romantic restaurant in Kansas City by the KC Business Journal, and it is easy to see why.  It is the perfect place to go for an anniversary or special date night.

They are participating in restaurant week for dinner, and the lamb chops and salmon are on the menu, as well as the gelato balls:

My Top 5 Places to Dine in Cannon Beach Oregon

20150717_103541

We stayed in Cannon Beach for a week in October of 2015 in a rental a couple of blocks from the beach.  It was awesome to wake up every day and go for a walk on the beach and listen to the waves crashing.  Cannon Beach is one of the few beaches that allow dogs, for all of you dog lovers out there.  We watched several Labrador Retrievers run out into the waves having the time of their lives.  I hope to get our dogs out there one day.

I digress, I have dogs on the brain!  Here are some excellent restaurants we ate at on our trip.

Ecola Seafoods Restaurant and Market – If I had my way, I would eat here every day!  They pride themselves in only serving Pacific “Wild” seafood.  All of their fish is line caught by a member of the family off the coast of Washington and Oregon.  They are well known for their “World Famous Smoked Salmon Jerky” and homemade clam chowder.  This place has a casual atmosphere with some of the best seafood in the world, a quick seafood cocktail, or maybe something special to take home and serve.  Their seafood case will make it had to decide what you want to buy.

Take home some canned smoked oysters to share with family and friends; they will love you for it!  I think I am going to order some now.  Here is their drool-worthy menu:

Driftwood Restaurant and Lounge – This restaurant has been in Cannon Beach for over 70 years and is a local favorite.  They have a very nice deck in front with ample outdoor heated seating where you can people watch to your heart’s delight.  We stopped in on a rainy afternoon for happy hour.  The bar area has a pub-like feel to it, very warm and cozy.  We had martinis and delicious little pig wings which it doesn’t look like they have on the menu anymore.   Check out their happy hour and dinner menus:

Pig ‘N Pancake – This place is a little off the beaten path, but it is well worth a visit.  The restaurant feels like you are in a tree house in the woods.  They have been in business since 1961 but opened the location in CB in 1997.  We went for breakfast couple of times on our visit.  Everything is good; you can even have clams or crab with your eggs!  They also offer gluten-free options.  The recipes for buttermilk, Swedish, sourdough and French batter pancakes are original recipes.  Check out their mouthwatering menu:

Bill’s Tavern & Brewhouse – another local favorite with a laid-back casual atmosphere just off 2nd Street and Hemlock.   You can get samples of their brews for a dollar each, and everyone raves about their burgers, seafood stew, oyster burger, chowders and fish and chips.  They don’t have a website; this is the best menu I found online:

Mo’s Seafood and Chowder at Tolovana Park – has a great view of Haystack Rock and they have a lovely patio you can dine on when the weather is nice (watch out for the pesky seagulls trying to steal your food!).  We ate here a couple of times on our visit, and I had the fried clam strips basket and the Bay Shrimp Louie salad.  You can get raw oysters on the half shell, a pound of steamed clams, or a sourdough bread bowl filled with clam chowder.  The Chowder Factory produces about 500,000 pounds of clam chowder each year; some delivered to grocery stores and the rest distributed fresh to Mo’s Restaurants.  Take a look at their mouthwatering menu:

Cannon Beach is super busy during the high season; I would recommend going in September or October after the summer rush.  If you are willing to stay a couple of blocks from the beach, you can get a decent rate for a VRBO (vacation rental by owner) starting at just over $100 per night.
